The Cape Town City Sightseeing Tour might just be the best-value experience in the city. We purchased the 5-Day Unlimited City Pass and genuinely never ran out of things to do. From iconic attractions and breathtaking viewpoints to wine tastings, boat cruises, and even experiences that included complimentary food, the pass unlocked some of Cape Town's very best highlights.
At roughly €20 per person per day, it quickly paid for itself. By the end of our five days, we'd packed in far more activities than we expected and discovered places we may never have visited otherwise. In this guide, we'll share our favourite experiences, the attractions we think are unmissable, and why we believe the City Pass is one of the smartest purchases you can make when visiting Cape Town.
Cape Town City Sightseeing Tour Highlights
Waterfront Duck Cruise
Our first excursion on the Cape Town Hop-On Hop-Off Tour was the Waterfront Duck Cruise, a unique amphibious bus-and-boat experience that offers a fun perspective of Cape Town from both land and water.
We climbed aboard Bella, the amphibious vehicle, and began with a guided drive around the vibrant V&A Waterfront before making a splash as the vehicle transitioned seamlessly into the harbour. From the water, we enjoyed fantastic views of Table Mountain, spotted seals relaxing on the harbour docks, and learned more about Cape Town's maritime history from our entertaining and knowledgeable guide. Lasting around 45 minutes, the Duck Cruise was a fun and memorable addition to our Cape Town itinerary. What makes it even better value is that the cost of this Duck Cruise alone is roughly the same as the price of the entire Cape Town Hop-On Hop-Off ticket, making the combined ticket an excellent deal.
Groot Constantia Estate
As soon as we'd wrapped up the Duck Cruise, we hopped back on the open-top City Sightseeing bus and enjoyed a scenic 30-minute journey to the Constantia wine region. Our destination was Groot Constantia, South Africa's oldest wine estate and one of the highlights included with the City Sightseeing ticket.
Included in the pass was a tasting of five estate wines and a guided tour of the historic wine cellar, adding even more value to an already impressive ticket. We spent several hours exploring the estate, sampling the wines, and soaking up the atmosphere. The staff were incredibly welcoming, the surroundings were beautiful, and the experience offered a wonderful introduction to the Cape Winelands. In fact, we've also ranked Groot Constantia as one of the best wine farms in South Africa. For us, it was another standout attraction that made the Cape Town Hop-On Hop-Off pass exceptional value for money.
In the early afternoon, after our wine tasting at Groot Constantia, we reboarded the Hop-On Hop-Off bus and made our way to Hout Bay, a charming fishing town located around 20km from Cape Town. Of the 80+ attractions included with the City Sightseeing Pass, two of them can be found here: a Seal Island Cruise and fish and chips at the popular Mariner's Wharf.
Despite still feeling the effects of our five-wine tasting earlier in the day, we decided to start with the Seal Island Cruise. Boarding the boat from Hout Bay Harbour, we were greeted almost immediately by dozens of seals lounging around the harbour and swimming alongside the docks.
The boat then cruised for approximately 20 minutes across the bay to Duiker Island, more commonly known as Seal Island. This small rocky outcrop is home to a large colony of Cape fur seals, and as we approached, the island seemed completely covered by them. Watching hundreds of seals basking in the sun, diving into the ocean, and interacting with one another made for a fascinating wildlife experience and another memorable stop on our Cape Town adventure.
Seals, Seafood & Hout Bay
After returning to the harbour from our Seal Island Cruise, it was finally time for one of the attractions we had been looking forward to all day - the fish and chips at Mariner's Wharf. Thankfully, it didn't disappoint.
There really is something special about enjoying fresh fish and chips by the sea, with the sound of the waves in the background and fishing boats coming and going from the harbour. Included with the City Sightseeing Pass was a generous portion of fish and chips, along with unlimited salt and vinegar to season it exactly how you like.
Simple, delicious, and perfectly located, it was the ideal way to refuel before continuing our Cape Town adventure and another example of the excellent value included with the City Sightseeing Pass.
Golden Hour in Cape Town
One of the highlights of our time in Cape Town was experiencing two very different, but equally memorable, sunsets included with the City Sightseeing Pass.
The first came after a day packed with adventures across the Western Cape, when we returned to the V&A Waterfront for a sunset cruise across Table Bay. Setting sail at around 8pm, we wrapped up in our K-Way jackets to battle the fresh sea breeze and settled in to watch the sun slowly sink towards the horizon. As the boat cruised across the bay, we were treated to incredible views of Table Mountain, Lion's Head, and the Cape Town coastline bathed in golden light. The cruise lasted around an hour and included a complimentary glass of prosecco, while onboard music, blankets, and a relaxed atmosphere made it the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of exploring.
The following evening, we swapped the ocean for altitude and boarded the Hop-On Hop-Off bus to Signal Hill. The conditions at the top were far less forgiving, with strong winds and chilly temperatures making us grateful for every extra layer we had packed. Despite the cold, the views were absolutely worth it. As the sun dipped into the South Atlantic Ocean, the sky transformed into shades of orange, pink, and gold, creating a spectacular backdrop over Cape Town. From our vantage point, we could see Signal Hill stretching towards the coastline, the iconic DHL Stadium below, and the endless Atlantic Ocean disappearing into the horizon. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets of the trip and a fitting reminder of why Cape Town is considered one of the world's most scenic cities.
From One Cruise to Another
The following morning began with yet another opportunity to enjoy Cape Town from the water, this time with a leisurely harbour cruise around the V&A Waterfront.
Before boarding, we made the most of another City Sightseeing Pass perk and stopped by Bootlegger Coffee Company to collect a complimentary all-day breakfast bun and coffee. It was the perfect way to start the day before setting sail around the harbour.
The short cruise provided some interesting insights into the history and operation of the harbour, along with views of the boats, waterfront, and surrounding mountains. While we enjoyed the relaxed pace of the excursion, having already experienced both the Waterfront Duck Cruise and the sunset cruise the day before, the boat ride itself felt a little repetitive. That said, it was still a pleasant way to spend the morning and another example of the variety of experiences included with the City Sightseeing Pass.
Table Mountain Is a Must-Do
No visit to Cape Town would be complete without a trip up Table Mountain, arguably the city's most iconic attraction. One of the biggest benefits of the Cape Town City Sightseeing Pass is that both the transport to the cable car station and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway ticket are included, making it an incredible value addition to the pass.
After spending several days admiring Table Mountain from below, it was exciting to finally make our way to the summit and experience it for ourselves. What surprised us most was the sheer size of the plateau at the top. From the city, it's easy to think of Table Mountain as simply a viewpoint, but once you're there, you'll discover a vast landscape with numerous walking trails, viewpoints, and unique rock formations to explore.
The panoramic views over Cape Town, the Atlantic coastline, Lion's Head, and the surrounding mountains are simply breathtaking and easily justify Table Mountain's status as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Whether you're visiting Cape Town for a few days or a few weeks, this is one experience that absolutely belongs on your itinerary.
Bonus Experiences Worth Your Time
While the major highlights such as Table Mountain, the Cape Winelands, and the sunset cruises stole much of the spotlight, the Cape Town City Sightseeing Pass also gave us the opportunity to experience several attractions that we may not have otherwise visited.
One of these was Asara Wine Estate, a beautiful Stellenbosch wine farm surrounded by mountain views and rolling vineyards. Included with the pass was a wine tasting, allowing us to sample some of the estate's wines while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the Cape Winelands. It was a relaxing stop and a great way to experience another side of South Africa's world-famous wine region.
We also enjoyed a tasting at Spier Wine Estate, one of Stellenbosch's most well-known wineries, where we sampled a selection of wines in a beautiful vineyard setting.
Another memorable experience was Vredenheim Estate, where we combined another wine tasting with a visit to the estate's Big Cats Park. Seeing lions, tigers, and leopards up close while surrounded by the vineyards made for a unique combination that we certainly hadn't experienced before. The wine tasting itself was also excellent, making it a worthwhile stop for both wine lovers and animal enthusiasts.
For a different perspective of Stellenbosch, we also hopped aboard the Stellenbosch Wine Tractor. This quirky vineyard tour takes visitors through the scenic wine region on a tractor-pulled trailer, stopping at a selection of wine farms along the route. The relaxed pace, beautiful scenery, and opportunity to visit multiple estates made it a fun alternative to the more traditional wine tours.
Back in Cape Town, we spent some time exploring the Two Oceans Aquarium, located at the V&A Waterfront. Home to a variety of marine life from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the aquarium offered a fascinating look at the underwater world surrounding South Africa. From colourful fish and playful penguins to impressive shark displays, it was an enjoyable way to spend a few hours and a great option for families or anyone looking for a break from the outdoor attractions.
While these experiences may not have been the headline attractions of our trip, they added even more value to the City Sightseeing Pass and helped showcase the incredible variety of activities available throughout Cape Town and the surrounding region.
