South Africa's Best Wine Farms

As wine lovers, exploring the Cape Winelands was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our South African adventure. As a British girl travelling with a South African partner who grew up enjoying the country's world-class wines, it was a special experience to discover first-hand why South Africa has earned such a strong reputation among wine enthusiasts around the world.

Of course, wine is incredibly personal, and everyone's favourites will be different. But after plenty of tastings, vineyard lunches, and scenic drives through the Winelands, we managed to narrow down our top five wine farms. For us, these estates offered much more than exceptional wine. They combined breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, delicious food, and memorable experiences that kept us lingering long after the final sip.

1. Anthonij Rupert Wine Farm

Taking the top spot on our list is Anthonij Rupert Wines, a stunning estate located on the outskirts of Franschhoek. While the estate itself is known for its beautiful grounds and elegant setting, our visit was met with relentless rain, meaning we spent most of our time indoors and didn't get the opportunity to properly explore the estate or capture photos of its exterior.

Despite the weather, Anthonij Rupert still earned our number one spot thanks to the quality of the wine alone. Our tasting took place in a grand dining room, which provided an elegant setting to enjoy the wines while sheltering from the rain. It was also special to be tasting wines at L'Ormarins, the historic farm featured on the labels of several of the estate's wines, including the iconic image displayed on the bottle itself. As lovers of bold, full-bodied red wines, this tasting felt perfectly suited to our tastes and was easily the standout wine experience of our trip.

We opted for the Anthonij Rupert Flight Tasting, which included three exceptional wines: the 2021 Optima, the 2021 Syrah, and the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine showcased the estate's commitment to quality, but the Cabernet Sauvignon was a particular highlight, delivering the rich, complex flavours that South African reds are so well known for.

Our favourite wines from the tasting were the Optima and the Cabernet Sauvignon. In the end, we decided to purchase a bottle of Optima to take home, as it has excellent ageing potential. Rather than opening it straight away, we're saving it for a special occasion in the future, making it a memorable reminder of our visit.

If you're a fan of robust red wines and are looking for a tasting experience focused on quality rather than quantity, Anthonij Rupert Wines should be at the very top of your Cape Winelands itinerary.

2. Ernie Els Wines

Coming in second on our list is Ernie Els Wines, a wine estate that originally caught our attention because we both grew up watching Ernie Els compete in golf tournaments around the world. What started as a visit driven by curiosity quickly turned into one of our favourite experiences in the Cape Winelands.

Perched on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, the estate combines luxury, exceptional wines, and breathtaking views across the vineyards and surrounding mountains. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt special. We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of wine to enjoy on the terrace, allowing us to take in the scenery before exploring the estate further.

One of the most unique features of Ernie Els Wines is the small golf challenge located outside. Guests can test their skills by attempting a hole-in-one from the tee to the green below. Anyone lucky enough to make the shot is rewarded with a special bottle of "Hole in One" wine, making it a fun addition to the wine farm experience.

By the time we arrived, it was lunchtime, and after already enjoying a wine tasting earlier in the day, we decided to swap another tasting for a leisurely lunch at the estate's restaurant. This turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. The elegant interior, attentive service, and relaxed atmosphere made it the perfect place to spend a few hours. We both opted for the steak, served with a fresh salad and carrots accompanied by a yoghurt dip, paired with a bottle of the Ernie Els Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon.

After lunch, we were invited on a tour of the cellar, where we learned more about the winemaking process and the estate's connection to golf. The oak barrels are named after golfing achievements such as Birdie, Eagle, Albatross, and Condor, while one of the highlights was seeing the impressive display of Ernie Els Signature Collection bottles, showcased on a large rock sourced directly from the estate's grounds.

Several hours and a bottle of wine later, it was finally time to take on the golf challenge ourselves. After a number of increasingly optimistic attempts, one of us managed to land the elusive hole-in-one, earning a coveted bottle of "Hole in One" wine to take home. It's another bottle we'll be keeping for a special occasion and a wonderful reminder of one of our favourite wine farm experiences in South Africa.

With exceptional food, fantastic wines, stunning views, and unique experiences you won't find elsewhere, Ernie Els Wines is much more than just a wine tasting stop - it's a destination in its own right.

3. Thelema Mountain Vineyards

The South African half of us had visited Thelema Mountain Vineyards before and hadn't stopped talking about it since, describing it as one of the best wine tastings in Stellenbosch. So, despite an already packed itinerary, we knew we had to squeeze in a visit - and we're so glad we did.

Thelema ended up being our earliest wine tasting of the trip, which meant starting the day with wine at 9am. Not something we can say we've done before! Breakfast consisted of a tasting of seven wines, ranging from crisp whites to full-bodied reds, and it was the perfect introduction to another day exploring the Cape Winelands.

Perched on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, Thelema is a beautiful estate with spectacular vineyard views stretching across the valley. Compared to some of the larger wine farms we visited, Thelema felt smaller and more intimate, which only added to the experience. Arriving at opening time also meant we had the tasting room entirely to ourselves, creating a relaxed and personal atmosphere.

The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, taking the time to talk us through each wine and the story behind the estate. One thing we've learned throughout our South African wine adventure is just how generous the tastings are compared to those we've experienced in Europe. The pours are so generous that by the end of a tasting, you've practically enjoyed a full glass-or two-of wine.

Thelema's reputation is well deserved, and if you're looking for a relaxed, welcoming tasting with excellent wines and stunning scenery, this is one estate that shouldn't be missed.

4. Groot Constantia Estate

Our first wine tasting of the entire South Africa trip was at Groot Constantia, and it felt only fitting that South Africa's oldest wine estate would be where our wine journey began. Nestled in the Constantia Valley, just a short drive from Cape Town, Groot Constantia combines centuries of history with stunning vineyard views, making it one of the country's most iconic wine destinations.

We visited as part of the City Sightseeing Cape Town Tours, taking the hop-on, hop-off bus from the city to the estate. Included in the experience was a cellar tour and a tasting of five wines, providing the perfect introduction to South Africa's renowned wine culture.

The cellar tour offered a fascinating insight into the estate's long history and winemaking process, while the tasting allowed us to sample a selection of wines that showcased the diversity of the region. As our very first tasting of the trip, Groot Constantia set the bar high and gave us a glimpse of the incredible wine experiences that awaited us throughout the Cape Winelands.

Our first wine tasting in Stellenbosch was at Simonsig Family Vineyards, a winery renowned for pioneering South Africa's Cap Classique. Often referred to as South Africa's answer to Champagne, Cap Classique follows the same traditional production method, but cannot legally be called Champagne as it isn't produced in the Champagne region of France.

We opted for the Tasting of the Day, which included six wines: two Cap Classiques, two white wines, and two reds. As we've already mentioned, we're usually drawn to bold, full-bodied reds, so we arrived expecting those to be our favourites. Instead, it was the Cap Classiques that stole the show. Crisp, refreshing, and bursting with fruity aromas, both sparkling wines were exceptional and the perfect introduction to South Africa's world-famous wine scene.

5. Simonsig Family Vineyards

Set against the backdrop of the Stellenbosch mountains, Simonsig provided a relaxed and welcoming start to our wine-tasting adventure, while also introducing us to a style of wine we'd continue to enjoy throughout our trip. If you're planning a visit, we'd also recommend ordering the burrata pizza. It made for a delicious snack and was the perfect way to break up an afternoon of wine tasting.

A Toast to the Winelands

Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply looking for a beautiful day out, South Africa’s Winelands have something for everyone. Our biggest piece of advice? Don't rush. Leave time to soak in the views, chat with the passionate staff, and savour each glass. Some of our favourite memories weren't just the wines themselves, but the moments spent enjoying them.
