A Day Trip to Zaandam
When most people think of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is usually the first place that comes to mind. But beyond the capital, there are so many unique towns, cities, and hidden gems waiting to be explored.
One destination that deserves a spot on your Netherlands itinerary is Zaandam, a colourful and character-filled town located just outside Amsterdam. With its striking architecture, riverside setting, and easy transport links, Zaandam makes a perfect day trip for anyone wanting to see a different side of the Netherlands.
Is Zaandam Worth Visiting?
Zaandam is absolutely worth visiting if you're looking to experience a different side of the Netherlands beyond Amsterdam. Just a short journey from the capital, it offers a refreshing mix of colourful Dutch architecture, scenic canals, riverside walks, and easy access to nature.
One of the biggest reasons to visit Zaandam is how easily it can be combined with Zaanse Schans, where you'll find traditional windmills, wooden houses, farm animals, cheese tastings, and classic Dutch countryside views. Together, Zaandam and Zaanse Schans make a brilliant full-day itinerary, especially if you want to escape the crowds and enjoy a slower, more picturesque side of the Netherlands.
For us, Zaandam is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Amsterdam, offering the perfect balance of culture, scenery, and photo-worthy spots.
How to Get to Zaandam?
One of the reasons we love Zaandam is how easy it is to reach from Amsterdam. Whether you prefer the convenience of public transport or enjoy exploring by bike like we do, getting there couldn't be simpler.
Whenever the weather allows, we almost always choose to cycle. For us, the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination itself, and cycling is one of the best ways to experience the Dutch countryside, canals, and local neighbourhoods along the way.
By Public Transport: Approximately 20 minutes
The quickest and easiest way to reach Zaandam is by train. Direct services run regularly from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandam Station, with the journey taking around 20 minutes. A single ticket costs approximately €3.50, making it an affordable and convenient day trip.
Planning to continue to Zaanse Schans? Regular buses run from Zaandam Station, or you can hire a bike and continue exploring at your own pace.
By Bike: Approximately 15km (50–60 minutes)
For those feeling a little more adventurous, cycling from Amsterdam to Zaandam is a fantastic option. The route is almost entirely flat, taking around 50–60 minutes at a relaxed pace, and follows dedicated cycle paths through parks, canals, and traditional Dutch neighbourhoods. If you're visiting on a sunny day, we'd highly recommend this option.
Things to Do in Zaandam
Zaandam centre has a relaxed atmosphere, with pedestrianised streets, independent cafés, boutique shops, and plenty of places to simply sit and watch the world go by.
One of the first things you'll notice is Zaandam's distinctive architecture. Inspired by traditional Zaan houses, many of the modern buildings feature colourful green façades and stepped gables, giving the town a unique character that's unlike anywhere else in the Netherlands. It's an incredibly photogenic place, and you'll find plenty of opportunities for street photography as you explore.
Here are some of our favourite things to do during a visit:
Admire the iconic Inntel Hotel
Stroll through Gedempte Gracht
Visit Zaanse Schans
Don’t Miss Zaanse Schans
If you're already visiting Zaandam, we can't recommend adding Zaanse Schans to your itinerary enough. Located just a few kilometres from the town centre, it's one of the Netherlands' most iconic attractions and perfectly complements a day exploring Zaandam.
Zaanse Schans feels like stepping back in time. Home to traditional working windmills, historic wooden houses, clog-making demonstrations, artisan workshops, farm animals, and local cheese tastings, it offers a glimpse into the Netherlands' rich history and culture. It's one of the best places in the country to experience the classic Dutch landscapes that so many people picture when planning a trip.
Getting there is simple. You can take a short bus from Zaandam Station, cycle there in around 15–20 minutes, or, if you're happy with a longer stroll, walk along the River Zaan in approximately 45 minutes.
For us, Zaandam and Zaanse Schans go hand in hand. While Zaandam showcases modern Dutch architecture, riverside cafés, and a relaxed local atmosphere, Zaanse Schans provides the traditional windmills and countryside charm that make the Netherlands so famous. Together, they create one of the best day trips you can take from Amsterdam.
Bonus Detour: Cycle to Twiske Nature Park
If you're visiting Zaandam by bike, we'd highly recommend making a small detour through Twiske Nature Park. It wasn't originally part of our plan, but it ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the day.
Just a short ride from Zaandam, Twiske is a peaceful nature reserve made up of lakes, woodland, wetlands, and winding cycle paths. It's a complete contrast to the nearby towns and feels like you've escaped into the Dutch countryside.
The highlight for us was unexpectedly coming across a herd of Highland cows peacefully grazing in the park. Along the way, we also spotted a variety of birds and other wildlife, making the ride feel more like a safari than a city day trip.
Whether you're cycling from Amsterdam or hopping on a quick train, Zaandam and Zaanse Schans make for the perfect sunny day trip. Combining colourful Dutch architecture, scenic canals, traditional windmills, delicious local treats, and peaceful countryside, the two destinations offer a wonderful glimpse into both the modern and historic sides of the Netherlands. If you're looking to venture beyond Amsterdam, this is a day trip that's well worth adding to your itinerary.
