A Day Trip to Wolfgangsee from Salzburg
Just under an hour from Salzburg lies Lake Wolfgangsee, one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria's Salzkammergut region. Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, charming lakeside villages, and crystal-clear water, it's the perfect escape from the city and an ideal day trip for anyone visiting Salzburg.
Whether you're looking to relax by the water, explore picturesque towns, take a boat cruise across the lake, or simply soak up some of Austria's most breathtaking scenery, Wolfgangsee offers a little bit of everything. We spent a day exploring the lake and it quickly became one of our favourite experiences in Austria.
One of the things that makes Lake Wolfgangsee so special is that it can be enjoyed in every season. During the winter months, the lake transforms into a magical alpine destination, with snow-dusted mountains, crisp air, and charming Christmas markets lining the lakeside villages. In summer, the atmosphere is completely different, as visitors flock to the lake to enjoy the sunshine, swim in its crystal-clear waters, and relax along the shoreline while surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.
Getting to Wolfgangsee from Salzburg
One of the best things about Lake Wolfgangsee is how easy it is to reach from Salzburg, making it the perfect day trip from the city.
By Car: Approximately 40 minutes
Driving offers the most flexibility and allows you to explore the different lakeside villages at your own pace.
By Public Transport: Approximately 45 minutes
We took the 150 bus from Mirabellplatz in Salzburg, which provides a direct and affordable connection to the Wolfgangsee region. Buses run regularly throughout the day, making it a convenient option for visitors without a car.
By Bike: Approximately 40km
For the more adventurous, it's also possible to cycle from Salzburg to Wolfgangsee, following scenic routes through the Austrian countryside and alpine foothills.
Whichever option you choose, the journey is part of the experience, with beautiful mountain scenery accompanying you all the way to one of Austria's most stunning lakes.
Cruising Across Lake Wolfgangsee
Before heading up the Schafberg, we decided to experience Wolfgangsee from the water aboard one of the lake's historic passenger ferries.
The boat service connects the main lakeside villages of St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang, and Strobl, making it both a practical mode of transport and one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the lake. We boarded in St. Gilgen and enjoyed a relaxing cruise across the crystal-clear waters to St. Wolfgang, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains accompanying us throughout the journey.
As the boat glided across the lake, we passed traditional Austrian villages, lakeside hotels, and sailing boats enjoying the sunshine.
Riding the Schafbergbahn
One of the highlights of our day at Lake Wolfgangsee was taking a ride on the Schafberg Railway (Schafbergbahn), a bright red cogwheel train that climbs high into the mountains above St. Wolfgang.
The historic railway has been carrying visitors up Schafberg Mountain since 1893 and offers a much easier alternative to hiking the mountain yourself. As the train slowly climbs higher, you're treated to spectacular views of the lake, rolling alpine meadows, and the surrounding peaks of the Salzkammergut region.
The journey itself is part of the experience. The vintage-style train feels wonderfully nostalgic, and watching it navigate the steep mountainside is impressive in its own right. With every metre gained in elevation, the views become more dramatic, making it difficult to put the camera away.
For those who don't fancy the several-hour hike to the summit, the Schafberg Railway provides an unforgettable and accessible way to reach one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Austria.
